Random: Stumbling Across LA

7:00pm
Sourgrapes and I meet up for an evening around town. She hardly ever comes up from LBC to hang in LA so I decide to make her trip worthwhile. We first grab a bite to eat at this little hole in the wall Japanese restaurant, MAKO, in Los Feliz. For $13.00, we each got a dish of chicken yakisoba, miso soup, salad, and a 7up. Yum. Seriously you can't beat that anywhere, especially with something that tastes so good.

8:30pm
After dinner, we head on over to Corey Helford Gallery, in Culver City (the motivating factor behind tonite's meetup) to check out new works by Sage Vaughn. We get there around 8:45, scope out the work, the boys, the celebrity sighting, the drinks, and split around 9:15. I'm normally not a fan of art openings because unless you're there with a crowd or are there to get into a crowd you're better off scoping out the work some other time. Still, Vaughn's work was enjoyable and entertaining enough: some of his paintings had pigeons (a recent reoccurance/obsession in my life) which I enjoyed. As for the dudes, well lotsa cute ones with lotsa tattooes (another growing obsession of mines recently)

9:15
After we split Corey Helford, we head on over to the grand re-opening of OOGA BOOGA in Chinatown (per another buddy's recommendation). The store is a nifty and tiny concept store retailing one of a kind and ultra rare items ranging from art to t-shirts to books and zines. Again its better to check these things out post-schindig. The crowd was chockful of the usual suspects for such an event.

What was more exciting was Chinatown. The suprising thing about it is that there's actually more to do here at night now. We skipped the Mountain Bar this time around, opting instead for Via Cafe, a Vietnamese eatery apparently open now for a year or so. The owners of Via also own Blossom, another Vietnamese joint over by Main and Fourth Street, where I work. Anyhow, Via is a chill vibe and has tons of paintings to meander while waiting for your order.

9:45ish
After sipping down Thai Ice Teas and some pasteries, we begin to think about what else might be happening nearby that we can check out. We decide to head up Sunset towards WACKO, since we were already in a "art seeing" mood. But first, on the way over, we noticed something happening at Giant Robot/JUNC over at Sunset Junction. It was another art opening for "Cast." Since it was nearing closing time it was nice to be able to go in, check out the work, scope some of the goods in the front and leave. Short, Sweet. My picks: Jungmin Koh's buggy sculptures, Jess Hutchison's knitted "landscapes", and the psychedelic Paltero pushcart out in front (although not sure if this was apart of the show).

10:00pm
Afterwards, I continue our tour into Atwater Village. So maybe it was just our lucky night, because and low and behold another art event, at the Black Maria Gallery. "Under the Table" showcases primarily illustration work by working illustrators. My picks from here: Andy Kehoe's paintings and Tiffany Liu's work. More exciting though was a sweet tee by P. Williams that I bought along with a couple of pins.

10:20pm
Driving on over to Highland Park, I decide to show SG another part of town I'm sure she's never seen. Highland Park at night is a whole other world. Figueroa was bustling with taco trucks and random people out and about and grubbing. Turning left onto York, we noticed some movements at Highland Perk, a yet to be open coffe shop. Since we were on a roll, we walk in to scope out the scene. The space is unfinished but nice and superbig. The crowd was a wierd mix of Latino family types and butchy latin gay dudes. Once we scoped out the crowd and the birthday cake we make a lowkey jog for the exit. Wish we would have stayed but mingling is a contact sport I haven't trained for in a while.

10:30pm
Driving further up York we pass the Wild Hare, which seemed to hopping... with the wrong crowd unfortunately.

10:31pm
At this point in the evening, if we stumble over anything else we'd be pushing our luck. So it was nice to see that drive through Eagle Rock was calm and quiet.

10:45pm
So I decide to drive along Colorado to get to Deadman's Bridge, which excited SG since she had only seen it from the freeway and actually never been on it. Before we knew it, we were back home and this completely blew SG's mind. Apparently I'm the only one who ever travels home on surface streets.

So that concludes this evening's advenutres in LaLaLand...
